intro • DEC.GCX™

The DEC.GCX™ is an advanced gas chromatograph that simplifies impurity monitoring by offering a unified solution for both liquid and gas phase analyses. It's engineered to integrate seamlessly into DEC industrial processes (e.g. DEC.SRU™ and DEC.DST™), providing critical data for quality assurance and process optimization.

Multi-distillation columns is complex and hard to manage, without the support of instrumentation. Thanks to in-line GCX™ module solvents will be continuously/cyclically analyzed (excluding HB stream).

Varying feed mixtures are quite usual in customers activity or the need to monitor distilled solvent purity, and thanks to this module, we will always be sure that the system is behaving at its best performances, reducing to the chances to face a contamination problem.

Principles of Gas Chromatography Analysis

Gas Chromatography (GC) works on the principle of separating the components of a mixture by distributing them between a stationary phase and a mobile phase. Here's how it functions:

  • Sample Injection: a sample from either the solvent or the vapor stream is introduced into the GC system;
  • Vaporization: the sample is vaporized if it isn't already in gas form, ensuring uniform mixing with the carrier gas;
  • Separation: the mixture travels through a column packed with a stationary phase. Each component in the sample interacts differently with this phase due to differences in boiling points, polarity, or molecular size, leading to separation based on these properties;
  • Detection: as components exit the column, they pass through a detector. Common detectors include the Thermal Conductivity Detector (TCD) for universal detection or the Flame Ionization Detector (FID) for organic compounds. The detector converts the chemical property into an electrical signal, which is recorded as a chromatogram;
  • Analysis: the chromatogram peaks represent the separated components where their retention time, peak area, or height can be used to identify and quantify the substances.

    Applications

  • Distilled Solvents (DEC.GCL™): the DEC.GCX™ excels in monitoring solvents pre and post-distillation. It can detect residual solvents, by-products, or contaminants that could affect product quality or safety. This is crucial in industries where solvent purity is non-negotiable, such as pharmaceuticals or fine chemicals;
  • Gas Stream (DEC.GCG™): for SLA (solvent laden air) streams, DEC.GCX™ provides insights into composition, ensuring that processes like VOC emission control technologies maintain their specifications. It detects volatile impurities or deviations from expected VOC compositions, crucial for safety and efficiency.
  • Benefits

  • Efficiency: consolidates multiple analyses into one system, reducing equipment footprint and maintenance;
  • Real-time Data: offers immediate feedback on process conditions for swift corrective actions;
  • Accuracy: provides reliable data for quality control, regulatory compliance, and process optimization.
  • optional interfaces

    The DEC.GCX™ module can be seamlessly interfaced with the following process and control modules:

  • DEC.DRC™ • Dynamic Reflux Control: this module adjusts distillation parameters to provide greater flexibility in response to changes in feed composition, maintaining high purity levels in the final products;
  • DEC.TLA™ • Trace Log Archive: based on DEC.HMI™, this add-on offers a comprehensive, historical traceability archive of all GC analyses, which can be exported in an MS Excel-compatible format. This feature helps customers meet traceability demands and allows operators to develop their own statistical analyses.
  • optional modules

    To ensure the DEC.GCX™ module operates at its peak efficiency, it can be seamlessly integrated with our H2G™ hydrogen generator and SXG™ zero-air generator. The H2G™ provides a consistent supply of high-purity hydrogen, which is crucial for the carrier gas in gas chromatography, enhancing the sensitivity and speed of analysis. Meanwhile, the SXG™ zero-air generator delivers zero-grade air, which is essential for detectors like the Flame Ionization Detector (FID), ensuring minimal background noise and optimal detection conditions. This integration not only simplifies your gas management but also guarantees the reliability and precision of your impurity detection processes.

    The DEC.GCX™ module can be interfaced with the following modules:

  • H2G™ • Hydrogen Generators;
  • SXG™ • Synthetic | Zero-Air Generators.
