The Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) is a European Union directive which commits European Union member states to control and reduce the impact of industrial emissions on the environment: IED sets emission limits and other requirements for a wide range of industrial activities, aimed to reduce pollution from industrial sources and protect the environment through an integrated approach.
The IED was adopted on 24 November 2010 and came into force on 6 January 2011: it replaced the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive, which had been in place since 1996.
The directive requires operators of industrial installations to obtain an integrated permit from the authorities in their Member State: the permit sets out the requirements for controlling and monitoring emissions from the installation.
