Industrial Emissions Directive• IED | BAT | BREF
European Union
The Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) is a European Union directive which commits European Union member states to control and reduce the impact of industrial emissions on the environment: IED sets emission limits and other requirements for a wide range of industrial activities, aimed to reduce pollution from industrial sources and protect the environment through an integrated approach.
The IED was adopted on 24 November 2010 and came into force on 6 January 2011: it replaced the Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) Directive, which had been in place since 1996.
The directive requires operators of industrial installations to obtain an integrated permit from the authorities in their Member State: the permit sets out the requirements for controlling and monitoring emissions from the installation.
The IED is a key piece of legislation in the EU's efforts to reduce pollution and protect the environment: it has been praised by environmental groups for its ambitious goals and comprehensive approach. The Directive is constantly being updated to reflect new scientific evidence and technological developments.
The IED is a significant piece of legislation that has the potential to make a real difference to the environment: it is important for all stakeholders to work together to ensure that the directive is implemented effectively.
In the United States (USA), the equivalent legislative approach is covered by the US Clean Air Act (CAA).

The IED BAT/BREF is periodically updated with new limits and integrations (trying to cover any “industrial emissions”), under the evaluations of several specific TWG (Technical Working Groups).
Latest IED BAT/BREF STS update (Commission Implementing Decision 2020/2009) was adopted on 22 June 2020 and came into force on 9 December 2020, establishing lower VOCs (volatile organic compounds) emission limits.

DEC has directly participated through its experts to the IED TWG (Technical Working Group): the IED TWG is a group of experts from industry, academia, and government who team up to develop guidance and best practices for implementing the IED.
DEC's experts have been involved in the IED TWG since its inception, and have played a key role in developing guidance on a range of topics, including:
DEC's participation in the IED TWG has helped to ensure that the IED is implemented in a way that is effective and efficient, and that takes into account the needs of industry.
Here are some of the benefits of DEC's participation in the IED TWG:
DEC is committed to supporting the implementation of the IED, and will continue to actively participate to ensure that the directive is implemented in a way that is effective and efficient, supporting the industry groups for specific training and clarifications.
